View Full Version : What You Need to Know before Getting Started

When you first get started taking online paid surveys, it can be overwhelming and confusing. Where do I go, what do I do? How do I know which sites are legitimate and which ones are scams? How does it all work? Can I make enough money to pay my bills? How much time will I have to spend? All of these questions will fill your head until you don't know where to turn!
1) Read, read, and read some more. There is so much information on the internet about online paid surveys, but not all of it is reliable. Find a website that has done much of the work for you. Visit blogs and forums dedicated to the process. Be wary of sites that have wonderful reviews of all of the surveys sites. They are lying. LOTS of the surveys sites are not only terrible, but are scams. Those sites that are giving rave reviews on all of them, want you to join the good and the bad ones. I've been accused of being harsh in my reviews, but that's because I only took on this job if I was allowed to be truthful and tell it as I see it. I do. Use Google whenever possible by putting in the name of the survey site followed by scam and see what comes up, such as Vindale Research scam. You'll get lots of info.
2) Don't believe any site that tells you that you'll make $500 in an hour. Again, they are not telling you the truth. You can make extra money taking online surveys, but you will NOT get rich. Take a look at this forum and you'll see where some of our members have posted their earnings. You'll get a realistic overview.
3) The online paid survey process is not a quick endeavor. You will have to be patient to be successful. It may take a few months to start seeing real money coming in.
4) Survey sites and their related marketing firms are VERY serious about what they do. They recruit members to take their surveys for very important market research about products and services. They do not tolerate inaccurate answers, or hastily completed surveys. These companies have ways to evaluate data and can and WILL disqualify or ban you if you try to beat the system. Please answer the questions honestly and in a reasonable length of time. They will red flag you if you complete a survey too quickly and without giving time for thoughtful answers.
5) After you have done your research, it will become clear that you'll need to join as many survey sites as your free time permits. Joining one or two will not bring in enough income to make it worth your while. Reading blogs and forums such as this one, will help you decide which ones to join. Learn from people who have been doing this over time. As you'll see, they have joined and unsubscribed from survey sites based on their experiences with them. In the end, you'll have a better handle on the process and can make wise choices.

It seems strange that you knocked Vindale Research ie "“Vindale Research” scam. You’ll get lots of info." and yet it is on the list that this site wants you to check "Yes to All"? So what gives? Also I apparently will not be allowed to register and view the data base of legimate survey companies because I can not register for all three--already a member of NPD, Ipso, Lightspeed, and will not (can not) send $34.95 to Payday Project.

Doies anybody have any experience with the paid Online Forums on here??.....i have a $100 2-hour online forum discussion tomorrow and i'm a little bit skeptical that they are willing to pay this much without asking you to sign up for something. I think the company is I-Trax. If anyone has any prior experience with this type of thing that would be great if you could leave me a message.

It's helpful if you are able to quote the passage that you are referring to. In this case I think you are referring to Heath's example of placing the word 'scam' after 'Vindale Research' in a search engine to see what type of information is revealed. This technique works for any survey company - good, bad or indifferent.
I am not certain which site you are referring to that 'wants you to check Yes to All'. I am also not sure which 'data base of legitimate survey companies' you are referring to, but if you peruse this forum you will find lots of different ideas for surveys that are legitimate and not-so-legimate. Some survey sites are good for some people and not-so-good for others.

I am not familiar with I-Trax but Invoke Interactives is a very legitimate company that often runs online real-time panel discussions that can pay as much as $150. The key piece of advice is to start signing in 30 minutes prior to the start of the panel discussion, because sometimes you get left out if you wait until the exact start time to sign in.

Do you mean interactive surveys instead of online forums? I have never heard of I-Trax and an online forum like this forum. Well I have completed several interactive survey for Invoke Solutions. My experience with them is mostly positive, but there is one thing that annoyed me.
I was invited to a interactive survey by LightSpeed Panel (http://www.yourfreesurveys.com/links.php?id=25). I was very excited because I would earn 1000 points if I participated. I was able to log in early that day but an error stopped me from earning the reward. The survey was paused in the middle of a question. After that I called the Invoke support number, they said it was a "Technical problem". I was really upset about this. I should have asked them if I would get a chance to complete the interactive survey at a later time
Well the next day I check my inbox, I was astonished when Lightspeed send me a invite to participate in that survey again. By the time I was that message the interactive session had already started. The moral of the story is to check your email often and log in to interactive survey as soon as possible.

For olderthandirt. I think you must be talking about the Vindale review that I did. I write the reviews for the yourfreesurveys blog and many here on the forum. Sometimes my opinions differ from yourfreesurveys, but I only took on the task of reviewing if I could be completely honest about what I thought of a website. With those reviews comes my own bias and experience with them, and sometimes people disagree with my opinions.
On the registration issue, just go ahead and click on 3 survey sites, even if you are already a member. Our system will recognize that and let you continue with your registration.
Hope this helps!

I have had experience with Invoke too and this is certainly different from them. I'll let you know how it went. I think i got this one through GlobalTestMarket if i remember correctly but the company running this 2-hour discussion or Forum is from I-Trax. For a $100 it's worth the 2-hours but if they want me to sign up for anything or download any particular software i'll refuse. It's going to be a busy day survey-wise for me today....i have a 90 minute Invoke interactive survey scheduled just a half-hour after the 2-hour discussion. Thanks for all the input guys!

Well i got to complete my $100 online discussion today. I was pleasantly surprised with how smooth it was. Although it took a little over 2 hours it was well worth it and hopefully i'll get a few more just like it. The bad news, i had a $30 interactive survey with Invoke about an hour after my discussion ended and i messed up with that one. Like an idiot i logged out of the session by mistake and couldn't get back into it. Hopefully it won't disqualify from future studies:(

Well done DAMO36 you totally crushed by record of $50 for taking one single survey. Congras on making $100 on an interactive surveys. These kinds survey are VERY VERY rare and it's really hard to qualify for them. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to partipicate in interactive survey that is about something I know a lot about and that pays over $25.

I feel a little bit better after getting an e-mail from them so right now it appears to be legit. Has anyone else noticed that good paying surveys seemed to dry up after June? I was having a very good year until the last of June. My total income had already eclipsed last year's total income by June 30. Now in July and August, I have yet to make $100.00. Is this a normal cycle?
jash18
08-21-2008, 06:03 PM
I don't know about the cycle. But, yes, the no of surveys has considerably decreased, and so has the reward amount given for completing surveys.
Maybe it is because companies are now on such a tight budget, that they are spending lesser than ever on surveys. But it should pick up again in a couple of months. ;)

I just started in February 2008, but I have noticed that I am also having a down month after receiving $500 in the past two months or so. They probably know that kids are getting ready to go back to school and their moms have less time for surveys. I bet we will be flooded in September.

Actually I don't receive survey invitations from Greenfield and survey spot every day. It always varies from week to week. Sometimes I get a survey invite one day and don't get anything the next day. The same thing happens with Greenfield. Note I'm only counting the paid survey invites.
I don't keep a record of Indox/SendEarnings because they rarely sent me any survey invites. I only count the surveys I receive invites from Daily Survey Panel even though I always access a survey by logging in.

Well, surveys are a business and behind each survey is a market research company or marketing department.
If you break the year into business quarters (as most businesses do) you will find the following:
First Quarter (Jan thru Mar) - most companies are dealing with their new budgets. These budgets were either finalized in the last quarter of the previous year or in the finalizing stages. They are trying to determine how to allocate all their research needs to match their budgets. You will find that there is not a lot surveys being run in the First Quarter.
Second Quarter (April thru June) - heavy duty survey time. They have their budgets down and they need to use them. This is high survey time and market research time for most companies. They especially want to deal with getting to everyone before the summer hits and most people leave for vaction. You will generally see the most activity in the Second Quarter
Third Quarter (July thru Sept) - there is usually a lot of activity in this Quarter but not as much as the second. The companies are well aware that this is "vacation" time for most people and tend to do most of their surveys in the Second Quarter. While there is still activity, you will notice a slow down.
Fourth Quarter (Oct thru Dec) - typically the slowest time of the year. Most budgets have been spent and you may see a brief burst of survey activity because some companies may discover extra money or left over money in their budgets and they will scramble to spend it in the Last/Fourth Quarter so it won't impact next year's budget. And by "impact", I mean the bigwigs in the company won't say something like "Oh, well you didn't spend all your marketing budget last year so we won't give you as much next year". Things are also the slowest in this Quarter because the companies will begin the process of outlining needs for next years budget and save some of the big stuff for the following year.
And then it starts all over again.
Hope that helps decipher things a bit. :)

My inbox is a bit empty this AM, so I thought I would use the time to edit profiles.
Updating profiles can help increase survey traffic. When I was starting out last winter, I didn't always respond correctly. I was getting next to nothing from Global Test Market until I looked at my profiles and realized that I had made some errors in my personal information.
Now GTM is one of my favorite panels.
Christmas presents have changed our consumption patterns, and that needs to be reflected in our profiles.
This week I'm going to try to update a few panels a day.

Sometimes I don't relly know where to post my questionsbut, here goes.
This is referring especially for Greenfield. Aside from this Yourfree surveyssite, there are a couple of other sites that pay cash for daily surveys involving greenfield which i am also a member of.
Questions
1. Should I unsuscribe to greenfield?
Sometimews I receive an invite from them but when I go to the pay sites it says there are none available.
2. OTX (nevermind they are the one that you answer so many questions to qualify that you feel like you have already taken asurvey with no benefits.
3. Pinecone Research requires sign up through a banner. Does anyone know of this website?
4.Does anyone else get a security certificate warning from opinion Out post?

1. Give Greenfield a good solid six months doing every single survey including sweepstakes and if you cannot make $5-10 per month then stop doing surveys for sweepstakes.
2. OTX is too prevalent to avoid now. GlobalTestMarket, OpinionOutpost, Mindfield Online, YourFreeSurveys, DailySurveyPanel, SurveyHead and QuickRewards all use them.
3. I know not where the banner might be.

here are my answers to your questions:
1). No I think you should unsubscribe from greenfield because I can still make some money with them even it takes a long time. For me it took about a year to learn $100 with them. If you are not a patient person then you might want to unsubscribe
3) Good news for you.... I know for a fact that Reward TV offers the link to join Pinecone. If you are interested then reply to this comment or pm me and I will sent you the link...
4) I have never heard of a security certificate warning from Opinion Outpost so no I never get them. Do you know what they are?????

Okay, I am new to this & still not too sure if this is what
I want to do. Here's why: I began last night (I thought) with
taking some surveys with the survey companies recommended by
yourfreesurveys...one hour later, I had only ONE survey completed for
a whopping one dollar payment.
My problem was, I would begin a survey, & half way thru it, they would
tell me I don't qualify....what????? You mean I just wasted 15 minutes on this
one survey, only to be told I "don't qualify"?
After an hour of this, I got discouraged.
PLEASE...I am only looking for a couple hundred bucks a month...is this possible
doing this type of work?
I don't have time to waste like this. I need to do surveys that...PAY CASH only, no sweepstakes junk. But, if I am going to waste time taking 1 hour, only to have earned one dollar (because only one of the several surveys) would take my survey, then this will not work.

John

Okay, I am new to this & still not too sure if this is what
I want to do. Here's why: I began last night (I thought) with
taking some surveys with the survey companies recommended by
yourfreesurveys...one hour later, I had only ONE survey completed for
a whopping one dollar payment.
My problem was, I would begin a survey, & half way thru it, they would
tell me I don't qualify....what????? You mean I just wasted 15 minutes on this
one survey, only to be told I "don't qualify"?
After an hour of this, I got discouraged.

im sorry 2 dissapoint u but those wasted 15 TO 30 MIN. OF NOT QUALIFIED survey time is an EVERYDAY PAIN FOR ALL OF US SURVEY TAKERS. especially OTX or GREENFIELD wise. Join the survey panels recommended in THIS FORUM and this blog http://www.yourfreesurveys.com/wordpress and NOT the ones from YOUR FREE SURVEY PANEL itself. they r very different.

:confused:I have been doing online surveys since 2005 after a medical problem caused me to stop working.
I like doing surveys but I think I could get better return if I had a more organized way to determined what survey sites to join. Up until now, I have joined every site I came across that is free!
Is there a way to determine which survey sites would best match my demographics? I’m a 48 year old woman, married, no children, unemployed but active in fitness, volunteer work. I manage our money on line but I no longer do any business and very limited domestic traveling.
I’m moderately current with technology but I’m not interested in video games.
I have a strong opinion about the ingredients and price of personal care products (i.e. make-up) and equally passionate opinion about house cleaning products.
If anyone with more expensive, could suggest which direction I should attempt to qualify for more surveys, please let me know.
I routinely spend 12 minutes on Valued Opinion to learn I haven’t qualified for the $3 Survey.
I qualify for about 1 out of 8 Valued Opinion surveys. Is my time better spent completely Survey Spot who always find a survey for me to take but my “reward” is usually 5 or more entries in their grand prize. On occasion, I do receive a dollar or two from Survey Spot.
Best Regards, YP

My name is LapisLee and I have been taking paid online surveys for the past 18 months. This series of articles, based on my own experience is to help newcomers and more experienced survey takers improve their earnings, while minimizing the time spent in front of the computer. I started keeping records of my paid online surveys on January 31, 2008. I spend an average of two to three hours per day taking surveys. I have earned $3173.46 in 18 months from 31 survey sites, which is $176.30 per month. My actual receipts are $3007.61, which is $167.09 per month. The average survey site earned $5.69 per month, but that does not take into account how recently I have joined some sites, so I predict that this number will go up dramatically, particularly after the recent recession which has effected survey frequency. I also won a $1200 Apple MacBook and $200 Apple iPod Touch from being a member of an online forum and $110 from various contest wins, such as the $25 I won from YFS July contest. The number of products, such as socks, underwear, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, chewing gum, mints, pasta sauce, potato chips, granola bars, etc. are far too numerous to mention; however, they are a also a large part of why taking paid online surveys is lucrative for me.
In addition to products and monetary incentives, I also enjoy being the first to view new movie trailers, television shows, commercials and products. Expressing my opinion and influencing new product concepts is also another enticing part of taking surveys. I always try my best to give honest, thoughtful opinions because not only does this preserve my own integrity, but survey companies often recognize and reward the respondents who give the most in-depth, insightful and honest answers. They will also disqualify those whose answers are not consistent over time.
10 Good Tips for Taking Paid Online Surveys
Everyone wants to know which surveys pay, but there are a few other things that you need to know before you even sign up for your first paid survey site. Here are ten tips, tricks and techniques that I have learned and I will add others as they occur to me. I am sure other members will add their own as well.
Use a brand new email address that is dedicated solely to surveys, because you will want to ensure that you have a dedicated email account to store and organize your survey invitations. This ensures that you do not get email invitations mixed up with your personal email, and it makes it easier to track individual survey panel invites. A good one to use is Gmail, because it has color-coded labels for labeling different surveys from different panels. You can also use Hotmail.com, Yahoo.com, AOL.com, etc.
NEVER pay for a list of paid online surveys because we will provide that list to you freely. You do not need to pay anyone for anything. All you will need is a list of 20-30 good legitimate paid online surveys. You also do not need to sign up for 100-200 surveys. A basic list of 10 legitimate survey sites is enough to get anyone started and 30 survey sites is enough to make over $200 per month within six months time.
Get Roboform in order to save all of your passwords and personal information. Roboform will fill out online forms at the click of a button saving you time and effort. In addition, it can also be used to safely store passwords and enter those at a click of a button as well so you’ll never forget a password again. Roboform is 100% free for the shareware version. You can download it here: Roboform (http://download.cnet.com/RoboForm/3000-2092_4-10037672.html)
Get a PayPal account so you can get paid FAST. Checks often take six to eight weeks to arrive and most of the larger legitimate survey sites are now implementing PayPal into their payment systems.
AVOID all Get Paid to Try (GPT) offer sites that tell you to sign up for Silver, Gold and Platinum offers. These never lead to legitimate paid survey sites.
NEVER give out your Social Security number or credit card information. Legitimate survey companies will not ask for either of these numbers except for tax purposes if you earn more than $600 with them during the course of the tax year, in which case you will receive an IRS W-2 form from the company at the end of the year.
ONLY give out your cell phone number for text-based surveys that you opt-in to; otherwise, I would avoid it.
When you complete a paid survey, ALWAYS save the email invitation and keep an accurate record of every survey that you complete, particularly surveys of $5 and above. If there is a discrepancy and you do not receive credit for a survey it is very important that you have the survey number to reference in order to collect your incentive. Also, save the original email invitation for each survey company that has the link to the home site and the support email, as well as create a link in your browser favorites for quick access. Browser links are particularly important for daily survey panels that you will access first thing every morning after completing higher paying surveys from your email inbox.
ALWAYS fill in all of the profiles when you sign up for each paid survey site. This will insure that you receive the maximum number of surveys that you qualify for and allow the survey company to target you more accurately so you disqualify less often. Also keep them updated.
Check your email FREQUENTLY as the highest paying survey invitations and, especially the lucrative panel forums, often fill up within a few hours or even sooner of the email invitation arriving in your inbox.

Before you begin I'd say you need to be realistic about your goals or you will soon give up. The other thing is being patient and sticking with it. ANyone trying to make a quick buck isn't going to last.
