It may also seem obvious that you would need a virus scanner for your computer; however, it is even more important when investigating the wonderful, wacky world of survey taking. Here is an excellent free virus scanner that I use called AVG (http://free.avg.com/).

Who we are (http://free.avg.com/ww.about)

Founded in 1991, with corporate offices in Europe, the US and the UK, AVG is focused on providing home and business computer users with the most comprehensive and proactive protection against computer security threats.

With more than 70 millions active users around the world, the AVG family of security software products is distributed globally through resellers and through the Web and supports all major operating systems and platforms.

Employing some of the world’s leading experts in software development, threat detection and prevention, and risk analysis. AVG is uniquely positioned to spearhead innovation in the industry. The company continues to invest in R&D, teaming with leading universities to maintain its technological edge.

AVG has experienced significant growth in the last few years, becoming the world’s fourth largest vendor of antivirus software measured by installed user base. The company will continue to expand and address the needs of the global market through improved technology and broader language and platform support.

What does it mean to be "tough on threats, easy on you"?

Computer and internet use is an integral part of our everyday lives. Every aspect of our lives is accessible electronically, which brings considerable benefit – and, unfortunately, considerable risk. Our role is to shield you from that risk by providing powerful, easy-to-use protection that works efficiently and invisibly in the background so you can focus on using your computer, not worrying about security.

As the nature of threats continues to evolve - from computer - and web-borne viruses to complex exploits designed to steal information for financial gain, the nature of protection must also evolve. Using the latest technology developed by world-renowned security experts, AVG provides real-time defenses against real-time threats. With AVG software on your system, you can safely surf the net, create online profiles, shop, bank online, download files, store data, chat, and email, safe in the knowledge that your personal and professional information will not be stolen or misused.

In a nutshell, AVG enables people and businesses to use computers with confidence and without aggravation by protecting them from disruption and loss.

AVG Free provides you with basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows and is available to download for free.

I was first exposed to AVG Anti-Virus when I sent my computer to a technician. He installed two key programs that essential for an efficient and reliable computer. The first one was AVG Anti-Virus and Spyware Doctor (http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor).

Both of these programs have high quality even though they are FREE. AVG Anti-Virus is the same thing as buying a Symantec Antivirus & Security Software, which will cost you about $59. Now, I ask you why pay for something that you can get for FREE?

I also HIGHLY recommend SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html), AdAware (http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php) and CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download).

SpyBot Alternate Free Download (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html)

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

AdAware Alternate Free Download (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2008/3000-8022_4-10045910.html)

"The bottom line: Ad-Aware is your best option for keeping spyware and adware under control on your PC." - CNET.com

CCleaner Alternate Free Download (http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10315544.html)

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

Another program I strongly recommend is Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html). This program blocks all spyware websites and prevents tracking cookies from being installed in your computer. It also have many other benefits that make your computer much safer.

SpywareBlaster is the original anti-spyware protection solution!

Developed in 2002 to help users prevent spyware installs, SpywareBlaster pioneered the effective use of prevention techniques to reduce or greatly eliminate spyware-related problems, as well as problems related to other potentially unwanted software such as dialers, browser hijackers, and adware.

Today's SpywareBlaster is greatly enhanced - protection is still the foremost purpose of the program, but it also provides unique utilities like the exclusive "System Snapshot", and various useful tools. The interface has been upgraded to provide easier access to all of the new options, including protection for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and many other browsers.

Help keep your system safe and secure with SpywareBlaster. We hope you like it!

This help file outlines many of the functions and features in SpywareBlaster. If you need any other assistance, please see the Javacool Software Knowledgebase.
